What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century by shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach. Functional Medicine practitioners address the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms, listen to the patients’ histories, and examine the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence longterm health and complex chronic disease.

what is a health coach?

A health coach helps you identify your needs and create a path to wellness.  This personalized approach empowers you to take charge of your health and create self-directed, lasting changes. The coach listens to you and believes in your ability to change. The coach knows that you are the expert of your own life. The coach is nonjudgmental and supportive and offers information so you can make choices that resonate with your lifestyle.

WHAT DOES A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH DO?

Functional Medicine Certified Health Coaches use a ground-breaking whole systems approach that integrates the principles of Functional Medicine, functional nutrition, eating psychology, mind-body medicine, and positive psychology.

  • Functional Medicine health coaches provide proactive and personalized support to empower clients to take an active role in their own health.

  • Functional Medicine health coaches can help bridge the gap between doctors office visits and everyday life by addressing how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the emergence and progression of disease.

Is Health Coaching Right for Me?

If you answer yes to any of the following, then health coaching is right for you!

  • Do you want to follow your doctor’s recommendations but don’t know where to start?

  • Do you want to have more energy, focus and vitality?

  • Do you want to sleep better at night?

  • Do you want to lose weight?

  • Do you want support “resetting” after a rough patch?

  • Have you been struggling to stick to an exercise program?

  • Do you want to reset your cravings by understanding how food makes you feel?

  • Would you like to learn how to eat intuitively and choose the right foods for your unique body?

  • Do you experience chronic digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, heartburn, or diarrhea?

  • Are you experiencing unpleasant symptoms associated with perimenopause or menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, and increased irritability?

  • Are you currently being treated for a chronic condition?

  • Does a chronic condition run in your family?

  • Are you feeling overwhelmed or stressed? Would you like to learn coping methods?

  • Do you need someone to listen to you? Are your doctor’s office visits too short to really get to the root of the cause of your problems?

  • Are you ready to take control of your future health by making lasting, realistic changes?

WHAT ARE THE SESSIONS LIKE?

  • Sessions last either 75 minutes (initial consultation) or 45 minutes (follow-up sessions) and can be conducted either via video conference, in person or on the phone.

  • Clients share what’s on their minds and how they’re feeling.

  • Katie helps the clients identify barriers to healthy lifestyle changes.

  • Katie offers information, with the client’s permission, on strategies to improve health.

  • Strategies may include a mind-body technique, a food to add or to eliminate, an article to read, etc.

  • A plan is co-created — clients, with Katie’s help, make a plan that feels comfortable and attainable.

  • In coaching sessions you will be the one who determines what topics you want to focus on. Examples include adhering to dietary recommendations, weight loss, developing and sticking with an exercise plan, ways to reduce stress, or how to deal with challenging family or work situations.
